Portobello Treasure Hunt.
On a beautiful sunny Autumn day we held the Pirates of Portobello Treasure Hunt.
We had no idea how many families would come along, we thought we may have between 20 and 30 maximum if the weather held up but we had enough maps of "Porty Island" for 50. So we were amazed when 75 families, many dressed as Pirates, showed up!
The treasure hunt started at the Community Garden on the promenade and visited the Daisy Park, Rosefield Park, Portobello Town Hall, Harry Lauder’s birthplace, Portobello Baths and finishing with the Treasure Chest half buried on the beach.
We had some wonderful live pirate music from three local musicians to set the teams off on there way. En route the families made Pirate hats, flags and had their faces painted with scar’s, beards and eye patches. Each family team had to answer some questions about the places they visited and about Portobello. Hopefully everyone learned a little bit more about the area they live in. It was a fair walk for the teams but when they finally found the treasure the kids were able to have a lucky dip in the chest and collect a certificate.
It’s difficult to estimate the number of people who took part but we reckon there were around 250 people who came along.
Many thanks to all the families who helped to make this a big success and also to the POD team who worked hard to put this event on and to the weather. We had lots of positive feedback asking for another one next year so hopefully we will do something again along these lines in 2008.
